Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Angus Watson
11th December 2007
Welcome to the Website of The Light Dragoons. I trust that you find this both interesting and informative about what life is like in 'Englands Northern Cavalry'.
In 2007, the Regiment has been deployed on Operation HERRICK in Afghanistan. It has been a demanding and challenging tour, the like of which we have not
undertaken for very many years. For those who deployed, it has been an experience unmatched by anything they have done previously in their military careers. On occasion, the fighting has been intense and prolonged, requiring soldiers at all levels to show courage and professional skill of the highest order. And it has been conducted in an environment which is harsh for both men and equipment; living in the desert in temperatures of over 50 degrees Celcius has required considerable effort and strength of character. It has been equally tough for the friends and families of those deployed who have had to deal with the uncertainty and concern. They have been magnificent and have shown the strength of the wider Regimental Family of which the Serving Regiment is a part.
Looking forward to 2008, the Regiment is looking forward to undertaking a training year which the skills learned and developed in Afghanistan will be honed further in preparation for further deployments in the years to come. At the same time there will be opportunity for fun with officers and soldiers enjoying a number of different activites. These include skiing in Canada and Switzerland, bobsleighing in Canada, skydiving in Florida, Polo in Argentina, a Regimental Rugby tour to South Africa, diving in Jordan, sailing in the Mediterranean and adventure training for the whole Regiment in Jersey. We will also have the opportunity to play some sport; football, rugby, cricket, hockey and boxing are all in the programme of events.
So life as a Light Dragoon is never dull and provides numerous opportunities for excitement, enjoyment and a thoroughly rewarding professional challenge. If you want to find out more, please explore the site and then contact us.
